Democracy for the Middle East

July 29, 2002

Wishful journalism

Is there humor to be found in the current crisis? You bet and its name is ......(drum roll please) state-controlled media (piatti). In this BBC "report" the Hugh Grantishly photogenic and necessarily duplicitous Abdullah sings the pan-Arab tune with a straight face, whilst the BBC responds with hard-hitting, investigative ..juxtaposition.

In his remarks, the king expressed concern about hawks in the US administration who were "fixated on Iraq". He said if they held sway, "that really would destabilise American strategic interest even more in the Middle East".

The monarch said the international community was united in its opposition to an attack on Iraq.

"All of us are saying: 'Hey, United States, we don't think this is a very good idea.'"

The king denied reports that Jordan would host US troops preparing to bomb Iraq.

In the wake of similar reports indicating that American and British troops have been pre-positioning in eastern Jordan for some time and that the Hashemites are primed for a return to power in Iraq, The Times of London adds to the hilarity telling us that the exemplary Abdullah is going to Washington to convince the Americans not to attack Iraq. So who's more utterly clueless at the moment, British left-wing journaliists or Saddam? DFME confidently puts its money on the former.
