Democracy for the Middle East

August 18, 2004

Gored

The brother of a Palestinian who collaborates with Israel had this to say about it:

"You won't find a Palestinian family without collaborators so we are just like everybody else."

Interesting piece, but we did a spit-take when Oxblog's Patrick Belton wrote that Chris McGreal's article was an example of writing that doesn't rely on "easy ideological narratives."

CHRIS MCGREAL STEPS outside the automatic writing machine school predominating in current journalism..

Excuse us but Chris McGreal is a walking "ideological narrative" and one needn't delve far below the surface of his piece to find the message. In McGreal's view Israel is evil incarnate and his story about the desperation and corruption of Palestinian society is intended to show another aspect of it. In July of last year McGreal filed an unprofessional and frankly disgusting "report" from the West Bank that employed unsubstantiated and un-commented upon accusations by local Palestinians to leave readers with the impression that Israeli soldiers were deliberately trying to kill Palestian children. It ran in the Guardian (no surprise there) under the headline and Palestinian quote: "I can't imagine anyone who considers himself a human being can do this." Dehumanizing Jews is a respected pasttime in Europe and McGreal's libel firmly established him as the old world's chief propagandist in the Middle East.

This time, Oxblog got it wrong.
