Democracy for the Middle East
October 05, 2004Back That Truck Up
We just reviewed CSPAN's
stream of the first presidential debate. All we can say is that the pundits who thought that it was Kerry in a run away allowed the Senator's superior poise, stature, style and rhetorical sophistication to blind them to Bush's clear superiority on substance.
Bush handily rebutted Kerry's 20-20 hindsight and articulated a straight-talking, common sense view of the War on Terror. He was more aggressive, scored more debating points, and pounded home a message that is going to stick - that the president is the wiser, tougher, more trustworthy and more sincere candidate.
Sure, we would have liked it if Bush had been less repetitive and done a better job of contrasting his bold post 9-11 doctrine with the post Vietnam neo-isolationism in which the Democrats wallow.
The match-up reminded us of Dewey vs. Truman, with Bush playing the part of the plain-talking, former shoe salesman from the Midwest who stunned the legacy media foundries of the day by beating the smooth-talking New York governor and winning re-election.
Americans know that this president is slow of speech but they respect him for it and identify with him. Like the ancient leader of Israel, he prefers to concentrate on staying close to God and speaking truthfully.

Ah, now Dubya is our Moses! Well, let's see him part the Red Sea and lead our people through the Sinai (e.g. Taba) and into the promised land. War and Free Trade sound to me more like Pinchas' party than that of the enlightened and prophetic levites and kohanim. We need democracy and transparency everywhere in the world--and we need it now!! Aaron (ie Cheney) is now an obscurantist and money hound; Joshua (ie Rumsfeld) is now a brass trumpeteer mesmerized by his own music. Many march and follow. I hesitate and think. Jeremiads pour from my ashen lips: defend Israel and provide for the poor! Defeat our enemies and offer them maimonidean magnanimity! Vote Kerry--and keep his feet to the flames. (No Carter or James 'Bush Bulldog' Baker as envoys). Happy New Year!!

Perhaps you should visit the front page of Salon.com It apperars that Bush might have been wired. Could it be that he was hearing voices?

Anachronisms Aflame:
"'Tis true the Prophet was slow of speech
But he had much to say; you dear President
are but a faint bulb bur'd neath a crooked tree."
--Henri Dawid Thoreau (a Massachusetts liberal)
