Question: What do you do when your candidate gets desperate, outs his opponent's daughter as a lesbian, and the criticism starts to pour in?
Leave aside the cheap, cold, calculating cynicism--and cruelty--in Kerry's appropriation of the alleged opinions of an opposing candidate's family member to try to embarrass his opponent. Leave aside the view Kerry and his campaign must have of millions of religious Americans if they think this particular McCarthyite moment will work. Leave aside their fear of having an honest debate about a legitimate public policy issue--same-sex marriage, the role of liberal judges in advancing it, and the proper response of the elected representatives of the American people. Leave aside the fact that Kerry's alleged opposition to same-sex marriage is manifestly dishonest and cowardly. Leave it all aside. How stupid does John Kerry think the American people are?
Answer: Call on ABC News, spin doctors for the Democratic Party.

Cheney himself brought up his daughter's sexuality in response to previous questions in campaign speeches about the topic of homosexuality.
Cheney also thanked John Edwards for mentioning her in the vice presidential debate when the topic of homosexuality was raised.
Kerry had every indication from the Cheney family that this was a normal, appropriate, and even welcome way to discuss the topic.
How can the party that is pushing a constitutional ban on gay marriage say that Kerry is a "bad person" on this issue?! They are offended because to them it is an insult to describe someone as a lesbian. And THAT is the truely inappropriate message here.
By the way, Mary Cheney is very open and political about her sexuality. It is a public issue by her choosing. She is the gay community liaison for Coors Brewing Company, and served on the advisory board of the Republican Unity Coalition. She also currently receives a paycheck of $2,776 every two weeks for her role as the head of her father’s campaign team.
The Republican spin machine is very effective, but they are truly unfair in a great deal of their criticisms of John Kerry. Read more about the details before you jump to the spin conclusions. You'll be shocked at how wrong they often are.
